Please join the Republican Club of Lakeland at Cleveland Heights Country Club on Wednesday, June 7th as we present the second in a series of forums relating to our upcoming local elections. Our May gathering, with candidates for the Lakeland City Commission, the Board of County Commissioners, the Florida Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, was a huge success with over 50 people in attendance!
Our June meeting will showcase a debate between proponents and opponents of the “Strong Mayor” initiative that will be on the ballot in Lakeland this coming November. Advocates of the plan are basing their support on at least three concerns: 1) avoiding past problems and keeping them from reoccurring; 2) fostering leadership and accountability in planning for the city’s future; and, 3) centralizing power in the hands of a single person who can make changes quickly. Those in favor of the status quo point out that a change in the city’s current “corporation-style” system of governing is unnecessary.
Matt Doster, a Tallahassee-based consultant working with the Committee for a Strong Lakeland, will be representing the “Strong Mayor” group, while opposing viewpoints will be presented by Mr. Gene Strickland, Lakeland’s City Manager from 1986 through 2000. The format for the presentation has not yet been finalized, but all attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions.
Our meeting will begin at 11:30 am and, although there is no charge for admission, attendees may purchase meal tickets for a buffet-style lunch being served at noon. Meal tickets are $15 for club members and $20 for non-members. In an effort to plan ahead for what may be an even larger attendance than last month, we ask that you RSVP here by filling in the requested information before 5:00 pm on Monday, June 5th. Please indicate whether you will be purchasing meal tickets so that food will be available for all who wish to eat.
We look forward to seeing you at our meeting, and hope that you will share this important information with your friends and associates.
